How to prepare for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek?

Exploration and traveling to various heights requires some pre-trek work to be done so For all the adventure seekers to your dream destination, it is important to note and know how to prepare for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. It is often important to take care of important things and have a good preparation before beginning with the trek. Here are some of the key points to consider while preparing for the trek. Kashmir Great Lakes is a very long trek. So if you want to complete the trek you must start increasing your stamina. We have to cover about 15 km per day.

  • Fitness: In treks fitness doesn’t only mean physical fitness and stamina building, but also mental toughness and determination to complete the hiking through uneven, terrains and differing altitudes. It is important to have physical fitness in terms of stamina, strength, power etc but along with that having mental toughness to be able to survive in any weather condition, terrain, unevenness, determination and consistency throughout the trek is equally significant factor for any successful trek.
  • Independent trekking or Group trekking: An experienced trekker can go on a individual trek but if there’s no past experience in trekking then its advisable to have a guide for the trek or go on Kashmir Great Lakes trek package which gives both joyful experience and meeting new people and understanding and living new experiences and also because this trek needs a thorough knowledge regarding the trails and it falls under the category of moderate to difficult level.
  • Health condition: Before getting on board with the trek consult a doctor and have a body checkup. Increase your intake of complex carbohydrates to energize your body. Build a habit of drinking enough water in a day and stay hydrated.

  • Kashmir, As they righteously call it, is the “Heaven on Earth” that truly mesmerizes one with their jaw dropping landscapes. It is the perfect blend of beauty & adventure which further elevates trekking in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Kashmir Great Lakes trek is a moderate trek ranging between 70 to 75 km approx. In this trek, we cover six alpine lakes & a range of meadows in the western Himalayas of Kashmir. In this Great Lakes Kashmir Trek, we are also going to cross Sonmarg which means “Meadow of Gold”. This trek covers 6 most famous alpine lakes at one time: Gadasar, Satsar, Nundkol, Gangabal, Vishansar etc.
  • Kashmir Great Lakes trek in India, also known as KGL Trek in short form, covers the stunning natural lakes of Kashmir at one time which have the best scenic view.

Included/Excluded

  • Accommodation on sharing basis in Dome Camps.
  • Mountaineering qualified and experienced trek leader and support staff.
  • Meals: Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner (starting from Day 01 Dinner till Day 08 Breakfast) and complimentary evening tea & snacks.
  • First-Aid medical kits for emergencies.
  • Trekking equipment: sleeping bag, mattress, tent, kitchen & dining tent, toilet tent, utensils and crampon (if required). Also, gaiters, micro spikes and rope (if required).
  • All necessary entry fees and permits.
  • Driver allowances, toll taxes, parking, state taxes.
  • Transportation from Srinagar TRC – Sitkari / Naranag – Srinagar TRC
  • Any extra meals apart from the ones mentioned under inclusions.
  • Travel Insurance, items of a personal nature like porterage, tips, laundry etc.
  • Any other costing involved due to circumstances like natural calamity, weather conditions, riots, roadblocks, landslides or any other forced circumstances which are out of our control.
  • GST (5%) is applicable extra.
  • Anything which is not mentioned in the above inclusions.
  • Note: - The pick up from Srinagar TRC will be at 2:30 pm. We will arrange the transportation from Srinagar TRC to Sitkari and Return from Naranag to Srinagar TRC at an additional cost of approx. Rs. 3500 per vehicle one way. The amount would be paid directly to the driver and participants are expected to share the cost of the vehicle (One cab can accommodate 6-7 trekkers).

Itinerary

  • Activities:
    • Arrive at Srinagar Airport and meet the trekking team.
    • Drive to Sonmarg (approx. 90 km).
    • Overnight stay in tents at Sonmarg (9,186 ft).
  • Highlights:
    • Scenic views of Sindh Valley and the surrounding peaks.
    • Briefing and preparation for the trek.

  • Trail Details:
    • Start trekking through maple and pine forests.
    • Cross the Sindh River and ascend to Nichnai campsite (11,500 ft).
  • Highlights:
    • Breathtaking meadows and lush greenery.
    • Views of the Nichnai Pass from a distance.

  • Trail Details:
    • Cross the Nichnai Pass (13,000 ft) for panoramic views.
    • Descend to Vishansar Lake (12,000 ft).
  • Highlights:
    • Expansive views of Himalayan peaks.
    • The stunning Vishansar Lake surrounded by meadows.

  • Activities:
    • Acclimatization and relaxation.
    • Optional short hike around Vishansar Lake or to Krishansar Lake.
  • Highlights:
    • Soak in the serenity and reflections of the lake.
    • Photography opportunities.

  • Trail Details:
    • Visit Krishansar Lake and ascend to Gadsar Pass (13,800 ft).
    • Descend to Gadsar campsite (12,000 ft).
  • Highlights:
    • Spectacular views of both Vishansar and Krishansar Lakes.
    • Vibrant wildflowers and meadows near Gadsar.

  • Trail Details:
    • Trek through varied terrain to Satsar campsite (12,000 ft).
    • Pass through army check posts and clearances.
  • Highlights:
    • View of multiple interconnected lakes near Satsar.
    • Tranquil and secluded setting.

  • Trail Details:
    • Cross the Zaj Pass (13,400 ft).
    • Descend to Gangbal Twin Lakes (11,500 ft).
  • Highlights:
    • Twin lakes (Gangbal and Nundkol) at the foot of Mount Harmukh.
    • Campsite with stunning views of the lakes.

  • Trail Details:
    • Descend through pine forests to Naranag (7,450 ft).
    • Drive to Srinagar.
  • Highlights:
    • End the trek with forested trails and meadows.
    • Return to the city for onward travel or leisure.
